The Best Camera for Wakeboarding

GoPro HERO6 slow motion wakeboarding! - YouTube

The GoPro Hero9 Black is a versatile camera that allows you to get a wide range of different angles of your wakeboarding, or any watersport for that matter. This camera is waterproof, durable, lightweight, and pretty easy to use. Coming from the same camera family, the GoPro Hero9 has leveled up on the previous Hero8 Black in various ways. The Hero9 is the best camera for wakeboarding, and here’s why:

HyperSmooth 3.0

GoPro has enhanced their HyperSmooth capabilities from the previous Hero8. This feature is incredible. Say you have your GoPro mounted on your boat, filming you wakeboarding behind it, but the water is rough. If you are using your smartphone or a regular camera, the footage would come out bouncy and shaky. If you enable the HyperSmooth feature on the GoPro, the footage will come out smooth as butter. You will barely be able to tell the boat was bouncing at all. The only downfall to this feature is that it crops your video 10% in order to smooth it out, so you wont be getting as wide of a shot as you would without the HyperSmooth on.

Horizon Leveling

Horizon leveling is a feature brand new to the Hero9 that is such a game changer, and maybe the best reason to buy the Hero9 over any other GoPro. When Horizon leveling is turned on it will keep the video flat, or at “a level horizon”, even as the camera rotates. This will work up to about a 45 degree angle left or right, and then it won’t be able to keep it level any longer. This is great when you aren’t using a mount because it will eliminate some of the shakiness of you hand while you hold the camera.

But wait, there’s more….
If you buy and attach the Max Lens Mod to your Hero9, you can actually rotate the camera a full 360 degrees and the horizon will stay level the whole time. Yes, that means if the camera turns all the way upside down, it will still look completely normal and level in your video.

Slo-Mo and Resolution

The Hero9 shoots up to 240 frames per second (fps) which makes for crystal clear slo-mo shots on your wakeboard. It also has improved its resolution from the previous version. The Hero9 can now shoot in 5k resolution, improved over the Hero8’s 4k.

Mounting

The prime feature of GoPro is the versatility of the mounts. For wakeboarding you can mount your camera on the back of the boat, the wakeboard tower, your board, your head, or my personal favorite, on the rope. You can use all of these to capture your ride how YOU want it to be captured, and that’s what makes this camera such a blast to use.
